Updated Results of NC Primary Give Obama 3 More, Clinton 1 Less Delegates

A few more changes in the race for the Democratic nomination today.

The state Board of Elections in North Carolina certified its results today after reporting incomplete results from several precincts over the past week. The new total gives Obama an additional three delegates. What's more, Hillary Clinton actually lost a delegate in the process.

The latest count puts Barack Obama over the 1,900 mark by most counts, meaning that he stands less than 1,025 delegates from becoming the first African American to win the presidential nomination of a major party.

Clinton Picks Up Superdelegate

Matching the endorsement Barack Obama got from California Rep. Pete Stark this morning, Hillary Clinton added a superdelegate to her own tally.

DNC Member Keith Umemoto of California announced that he would be supporting Hillary Clinton- who won the Golden State handily- at the Democratic Convention in August.

Rep. Brad Ellsworth, an Indiana Democrat who has pledged to support Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in August, told reporters that he, in fact, personally voted for Barack Obama.

"In the booth, I voted for Obama," he said. "It's just my preference in the primary."

Obama Pulls Away In National Polls

After struggling with Senator Hillary Clinton for several months, Barack Obama has finally begun to put some distance between himself and his chief rival in national polls among Democrats.

As recently as May 7th, Senator Clinton had staged a comeback of sorts, returning from being down points to garner the support 45% of Democrats nationwide. That number exactly matched the support for Obama.

But today, the RCP average of the most recent polls puts Obama 7 points ahead of Clinton among Democrats, including one ABC News poll from earlier in the week that gave Obama a 12-point margin.

Persons in italics are former Senators who are given superdelegate status.
*By virtue of the stripped delegates in Florida and Michigan, neither Bill Nelson, Debbie Stabenow, nor Carl Levin will have votes at the Democratic National Convention.
**Though she supports Mrs. Clinton, Maria Cantwell has pledged to vote for Obama if he earns a greater portion of the final popular vote total.
***Though Washington, D.C. is not represented in the Senate, it's two "shadow Senators" are afforded votes at the national convention.

Rasmussen Poll: Obama closing gap in PA

Despite trailing Senator Hillary Clinton in early March by fifteen points, Barack Obama has significantly narrowed the margin held by his rival for the Democratic nomination, according to a poll released by Rasmussen today.

The study shows Clinton leading by just 5 points, at 47% to Obama's 42%. Clinton's lead has been shrinking steadily. A Rasmussen poll two weeks ago gave Clinton a 12-point lead, and another last week showed her ahead by 10-points.

The Pennsylvania race will, once again, be a must-win for Hillary Clinton, who is fighting to stay alive in the race for her party's backing going into the general election in November. A loss in Pennsylvania would surely end her hard-fought battle, though she has been heavily favored over Obama up to this point.

Hillary: "Rocky and I have a lot in common."

Speaking to a crowd in Philadelphia, the backdrop and hometown for the main character of Sylvester Stalone's classic 1976 film, "Rocky," New York Senator Hillary Clinton likened herself to the underdog boxer.

"Let me tell you something, when it comes to finishing a fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common. I never quit. I never give up. And neither do the American people."

Clinton kept her boxing-laced references going as she drew references between her uphill battle for the Democratic nomination and Rocky Balboa's quest for the victory of his career: "The Republicans aren't going to give up without a fight," she said. "And no matter how beautiful your rhetoric, the Republicans aren't going to turn off their attack machine—it doesn't have an off-switch.

"But one thing you know about me is that when I say I'll fight for you, I'll fight for you. I know what it's like to stumble. I know what it means to get knocked down. But I've never stayed down, and I never will."

Wolfson: no money problems in Camp Clinton

Despite reports last week that Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign is nearly broke, Communications Director Howard Wolfson said that "cash flow is good," and that the Senator had raised a considerable amount of money lately.

However, he acknowledged that Obama would again outraise Clinton for the month of March. However, Wolfson maintained that while he'd like more money to expand operations, the campaign is "going to have what we need for what we need to do."

Clinton superdelegate: "stunned" if Obama not next president

During an interview with a Canadia radio show, Representative Emmanuel Cleaver (D-MO), a superdelegate who has pledged to support Hillary Clinton, indicated that he believes her rival, Barack Obama, will win the Democratic nomination and the White House.

"If I had to make a prediction right now, I'd say Barack Obama is going to be the next president," he said. "I will be stunned if he's not the next president of the United States."

Cleaver went on to suggest that he does not agree with what he calls "the party line," the supposition that the protracted Democratic race is good for the party and the country. Instead, he said that it will be "the tragedy of tragedies" if the race continues right up to the nomination.
